Privacy

Coalheart is a fan-made Rust server run by a small team. We keep as little as the game needs, sell nothing and show no ads.

01

The short version

  • No cookies, no ads, no third-party trackers on this site. We count page views on our own server without knowing who you are.
  • The game keeps your Steam ID, your name and what you did in the city, to run the game and keep it fair.
  • Some in-game names are public: the city's top keepers, the council's proposer, the leaderboard, on this site and on Discord.
  • Ask and we show you, or delete, what we hold about you. Message a Steward on our Discord.

02

In the game

When you join, Rust hands our game server your Steam ID, your Steam name and your IP address. The server's log notes each join with those three, so we can deal with cheaters and ban evasion. Logs are cleared regularly.

Our game plugin keeps, under your Steam ID:

  • your name, when you first arrived and your role in the city;
  • what you fed the Furnace and the settlements' fires, your Heat Credits, the jobs and expeditions you took;
  • what the city's people think of you and the deeds they remember (a killing, a job done), for their talk;
  • the laws you proposed and how you voted;
  • for the leaderboard: the fuel you fed, the hours you played and the wipes you played in, added up across wipes.

Most of it starts again at every wipe; the leaderboard's totals carry on. A /report sends its text, your name, the name you reported and your grid square to the staff's private channel on Discord and to the server's log. What you say in the global chat, and when you join and leave (your Steam name and Steam ID, how long you stayed), is copied to a staff-only channel on our Discord so the Watch can keep the peace; team chat is not. A ban keeps the Steam ID, the name and the reason for as long as it stands.

Rust itself, Steam and Easy Anti-Cheat are run by Facepunch, Valve and Epic, under their own privacy policies; we don't see what they collect.

On this website

The live city is public. Every 30 seconds the game server sends this site the city's state, and anyone can read it (the live city, the leaderboard and our Discord bot do): how many players are online, the Furnace, the weather, the council's vote with the name of whoever proposed it, the keepers who fed the Furnace most and how much, who tends each settlement's fire, and the leaderboard's names and totals. Names are in-game names; Steam IDs never leave the game server.

Page views. Our own server counts how many times each page was opened each day. It sets no cookie and stores no IP address, no browser fingerprint and nothing else that tells one visitor from another: only a page, a day and a number. If your browser sends Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control, you aren't counted at all. The counts are kept 13 months.

Nothing else. No cookies or local storage, no analytics or ad scripts, no social widgets. The fonts, pictures and map come from our own server, so loading a page tells no one else you were here. The web server keeps no log of who visited; its error log can hold an address when a connection fails, and is cleared regularly. The site runs on a server rented from OVHcloud.

Links to Discord, Reddit, Instagram and X take you to their sites, under their own rules.

04

On Discord

Our Discord server lives on Discord, under Discord's privacy policy. Our bot gives you a role when you accept the rules or pick a ping; Discord keeps the role, the bot keeps no list of members. Its commands answer from the public city above. Discord's AutoMod tells the staff when a message breaks a filter, and reports to the Watch stay in staff-only channels.

The game posts what happens in the city to #city-events, with in-game names where they belong in the story: who beat off a raid, who opened an event's crates, the top keepers when a wipe ends.

If you link your Discord and Steam accounts, we keep the pair of IDs so the game and the bot know both are you, until you unlink them or ask us to delete it.

05

Why, and for how long

We use this data because we have a legitimate interest in running the game you joined: its city, its leaderboards and its Discord, and keeping it fair (anti-cheat, reports, bans). We don't sell it, share it for advertising or build profiles from it.

  • Play data: until the next wipe.
  • Leaderboard totals and a linked account: until you ask us to remove them, or the server closes.
  • Bans, and the reports behind them: as long as the ban stands.
  • Page counts: 13 months.
  • Server logs: cleared regularly; only as long as we need them for cheating and reports.
  • The chat and joins copied to the staff's Discord channel: on Discord until the staff delete them.

06

Your rights

You can ask what we hold about you, have it corrected or deleted, object to how we use it, or get a copy. Message a Steward on our Discord with your Steam name or Steam ID; we answer within a month. Deleting your game data also takes you off the leaderboard. If you think we got it wrong, you can complain to your country's data protection authority.

Coalheart is meant for players old enough to play Rust. We don't knowingly keep data about children.
